What do you think of when you read the word SIMPLE?
The definition in the dictionary reads:
- Easily understood or done.
- Straightforward, easy, uncomplicated, effortless, painless, undemanding
- Plain, basic, or uncomplicated in form, nature, or design; without much decoration or ornamentation
- unembellished, basic, no-frills
- Of or characteristic of low rank or status; humble and unpretentious.
- ordinary, pure, honest, sincere, candid
When you think of your life, do you think of any of those definitions?
No? Me neither. I fill my schedule with thing after thing. I complicate and overthink just about everything. Nothing is plain or basic about my life except my face and the fact that it hardly ever sees make-up these days. I don't lay low and rest. In fact, I rush my life just to make it to the next thing on my calendar, and hardly ever get to enjoy the moment I am in.
This past weekend, I went to Alabama to spend some time with family. With few things on the agenda (baby pics, apple cider slushies, and brunch with the bestie), we spent three days laughing and enjoying each others company. It was the most refreshing weekend I have had since IL. with Em.
Then what happens when all of that comes to an end? Monday comes and we fill our agenda with the hustle and bustle of meetings, shopping, wants, and activities.
But what if we resolved to live a more simple life? What would that look like?
I jotted down a few things that I think of when I think of a simple life....
So what does a simple life look like for you ?
Maybe it's more time spent with your family and less time spent in the office. Maybe it's simply being home more. Maybe it's throwing the "I want" out the window and enjoying what you already have. Maybe it's slowing life down to sit and enjoy the activity of rest. Maybe it's laughing more, saying 'Thank You' more, and listening more.
Whatever it looks like for you, I encourage you to find that. Why? Because I think living simply embodies Christ. I don't think Jesus came to this earth and lived an extravagant life. I don't think He spent tons of money (whatever that looked like 2,000 years ago) on unnecessary earthly belongings. I don't think He blew friends off because His schedule was just too busy. I don't think He avoided people in the grocery store because He really didn't have time to talk. I don't think He was late for meetings, work, etc. because He just couldn't find an outfit to wear.
So why, on our journey to become more like Christ, why do we live in such extravagance?
Why do we live such an opposite life? Why do we rush ourselves? Why do we fill our schedule full of commitments that we wish we didn't have to fulfill?
We can ask ourselves these questions for days. But instead, today I am resolving to live a more simple life. I am resolving to put less on my agenda and to rest just a little more. I am resolving to live more like Christ and less like a person of the world.
And if you find yourself in the same season of busy-the same season of discontentment. I encourage you to pray this prayer alongside of me today.
